Sulfurized Calcium Phenate Detergent
CAS Number: 61789-51-3
Sulfurized calcium phenate is an overbased detergent additive that combines strong acid neutralization with excellent high-temperature thermal stability, making it a preferred component in heavy-duty diesel, marine, and gas engine oil formulations. The sulfurized phenate structure provides superior deposit control under extreme temperature conditions compared to sulfonates, particularly in controlling piston varnish in gas engines. It is commonly used alongside calcium sulfonates to achieve balanced detergency across temperature ranges.
Technical Specifications
| appearance | Dark brown to black viscous liquid |
| sulfur content | 2.0–4.0 wt% |
| calcium content | 8.0–11.0 wt% |
| flash point (COC) | >165 °C |
| TBN (total base number) | 150–300 mg KOH/g |
| kinematic viscosity (100°C) | 50–150 mm²/s |
Applications
- Stationary gas engine oils (natural gas, biogas, coal gas)
- Heavy-duty diesel engine oils in combination with calcium sulfonate
- Marine trunk piston engine oils (TPEO)
- High-temperature thermal stability applications
- Industrial lubrication systems with elevated sump temperatures
Key Features
- Superior high-temperature thermal stability versus sulfonates for piston varnish control
- Strong TBN reserve for neutralizing acidic combustion products over extended drain periods
- Excellent performance in natural gas engine oils where varnish formation is a critical concern
- Good synergy with calcium and magnesium sulfonates in balanced detergent packages
