Polyisobutylene (PIB) High Molecular Weight Rubber Grade
CAS Number: 9003-27-4
High molecular weight polyisobutylene (PIB, Mv 1–2 million) is a rubbery, tacky elastomer used as the primary component or processing aid in tire innertubes, tubeless tire innerliners, and butyl rubber blends. It provides excellent air impermeability (10× lower gas permeability than natural rubber), outstanding water and chemical resistance, and high electrical insulation properties. PIB rubber grade is compatible with SBR and NR blends for co-vulcanization.
Technical Specifications

| moisture content (%, max) | 0.5 |
| Mooney viscosity ML(1+8) 125°C | 50–70 |
| viscosity average molecular weight (Mv) | 1,000,000–2,000,000 |
Applications
- Tire inner tubes and innerliners for passenger and truck tires
- Chewing gum base as a non-toxic, inert elastomeric component
- Adhesive and sealant formulations requiring tackiness and flexibility
- Electrical cable insulation and jacketing compounds
- Fuel and lubricant additive as viscosity modifier and anti-mist agent
Key Features
- PIB high MW rubber grade delivers air impermeability 10× superior to natural rubber for long-lasting tire inflation
- Excellent resistance to water, ozone, UV, and a broad range of acids and bases
- High inherent tackiness simplifies adhesive formulation without additional tackifier resins
- Compatible with SBR and NR for co-vulcanization with standard sulfur cure systems
