Overbased Magnesium Sulfonate Detergent

CAS Number: 61789-87-5

Overbased magnesium sulfonate detergent offers excellent acid neutralization and high-temperature deposit control, making it a preferred alternative or complement to calcium sulfonate in engine oil and marine lubricant formulations. The magnesium sulfonate structure provides superior high-temperature detergency for controlling piston and ring belt deposits in turbocharged diesel engines. It is widely specified in marine two-stroke cylinder oils and aviation piston engine lubricants where magnesium ash is preferred.

Technical Specifications

appearanceBrown to dark amber viscous liquid
sulfur content1.5–3.0 wt%
flash point (COC)>160 °C
magnesium content7.0–10.0 wt%
TBN (total base number)300–450 mg KOH/g
kinematic viscosity (100°C)40–120 mm²/s

Applications

  • Marine two-stroke diesel cylinder lubricating oil (CLO)
  • Aviation piston engine oils where magnesium ash is preferred over calcium
  • Turbocharged diesel and gasoline engine oils requiring enhanced detergency
  • High-sulfur fuel engine oils needing strong acid neutralization
  • Blended with calcium sulfonate in heavy-duty diesel engine oil packages

Key Features

  • Superior high-temperature piston cleanliness versus calcium sulfonate in turbo diesel applications
  • High TBN (300–450) provides extended acid-neutralizing reserve for long-drain operation
  • Magnesium ash preferred in marine and aviation applications for combustion cleanliness
  • Excellent synergy with calcium-based detergents for balanced formulation flexibility
