Phytosphingosine (t-C18 Sphingoid Base)
CAS Number: 554-62-1
Phytosphingosine is a natural sphingoid base (t-C18) produced by yeast fermentation, functioning as a direct precursor to ceramide biosynthesis in the skin and a potent antimicrobial agent against acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) and Pityrosporum ovale. By stimulating ceramide synthesis it reinforces the lamellar lipid structure of the stratum corneum, restoring barrier function in compromised skin. Used at 0.05–0.1% in anti-acne, ceramide-booster, and sensitive skin formulations.
