Aromatic Seal Swell and Conditioner Additive

Seal swell and conditioner additives are aromatic ester or polycyclic aromatic compounds used in lubricants to maintain the flexibility and dimensional integrity of elastomeric seals throughout service life. Without seal conditioners, elastomers can shrink, harden, and crack in synthetic or highly refined base oils, leading to oil leaks. These additives are essential in automatic transmission fluids, power steering fluids, and synthetic engine oils to ensure compatibility with NBR, HNBR, and PTFE seals.

Technical Specifications

appearanceLight to dark amber liquid
flash point>60 °C
aniline point<50 °C (indicates seal-swelling activity)
aromatic content60–90 wt%
treat rate in finished oil0.5–5 wt%
kinematic viscosity (40°C)5–50 mm²/s

Applications

  • Automatic transmission fluids (ATF) to maintain elastomeric seal compatibility
  • Power steering fluid seal conditioner for NBR and HNBR O-ring compatibility
  • Synthetic engine oils formulated with low-swell PAO or ester base oils
  • Hydraulic fluids for systems with mixed elastomer seal populations
  • Gear oils for rear axles and differential systems with elastomeric seals

Key Features

  • Maintains elastomeric seal volume and flexibility in synthetic base oil formulations
  • Prevents seal shrinkage and leakage in PAO and Group III-based lubricant systems
  • Low aniline point ensures adequate aromatic character for effective seal conditioning
  • Compatible with a wide range of seal materials including NBR, HNBR, FKM, and PTFE
