Diphenylamine (DPA) Antioxidant

CAS Number: 122-39-4

Diphenylamine (DPA) is a secondary aminic antioxidant that provides excellent protection against oxidative degradation in lubricants by scavenging alkyl and peroxyl radicals. It reacts with oxidation products to form stable nitroxide and carbocation intermediates that break the autoxidation chain. DPA and its alkylated derivatives are preferred antioxidants in high-temperature lubricants, turbine oils, and compressor oils where temperatures exceed the effective range of phenolic antioxidants.

Applications

  • Aviation turbine oils and high-temperature industrial turbine lubricants
  • Compressor oils for high-discharge-temperature reciprocating and rotary compressors
  • Passenger car and heavy-duty engine oil antioxidant packages
  • Hydraulic fluids operating at elevated temperatures (>100°C bulk oil temperature)
  • Gear oils and metalworking oils subjected to oxidative stress

Key Features

  • Secondary aminic antioxidant with high activity at elevated temperatures (>120°C)
  • Scavenges alkyl and peroxyl radicals through stable radical intermediates for prolonged protection
  • Excellent synergy with hindered phenolic antioxidants for balanced protection across temperature ranges
  • Low molecular weight for high molar activity at low treat rates (0.1–1.0%)
