Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring histidine-derived thiol amino acid produced by fungi and actinobacteria, recognized as a 'longevity vitamin' due to its exceptional antioxidant potency surpassing glutathione, vitamins C and E combined, and its ability to accumulate in tissues under oxidative stress.
