Itaconic Acid

CAS Number: 97-65-4

Itaconic acid (IA) is a bio-based, bifunctional unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer produced by fermentation of sugars. It provides both vinyl polymerizability and two carboxyl groups for crosslinking, adhesion, and hydrophilicity enhancement. IA is an important green alternative to petrochemical monomers in SBR latex, acrylic emulsions, and superabsorbent polymers.

Technical Specifications

appearanceWhite crystalline powder

Applications

  • Styrene-butadiene (SBR) latex for paper coating and carpet backing
  • Acrylic emulsion co-monomer for adhesion and stability improvement
  • Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) synthesis
  • Bio-based nylon and polyester precursor research
  • Scale and corrosion inhibitor copolymers

Key Features

  • Renewable bio-based origin from fermentation supports green chemistry initiatives
  • Two carboxyl groups per molecule provide strong adhesion and ionic crosslink sites
  • Bifunctional character enables both chain integration and terminal functionalization
  • Compatible with common acrylic, styrenic, and diene co-monomers
