Dinonylnaphthalene Sulfonic Acid (DNNSA) Rust Inhibitor

CAS Number: 57855-77-3

Dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid (DNNSA) and its calcium and barium salts are highly effective corrosion and rust inhibitors widely used in engine oils, gear oils, hydraulic fluids, and protective oils. The bulky naphthalene sulfonate structure forms a tenacious adsorbed film on metal surfaces that displaces water and inhibits both ferrous and non-ferrous corrosion. DNNSA is particularly valued in rust preventive oils and long-term storage lubricants where superior water-displacement is critical.

Technical Specifications

Applications

  • Corrosion preventive and rust preventive oils for metal parts storage
  • Engine and gear oil rust inhibitor packages (ASTM D665 compliance)
  • Hydraulic fluid corrosion inhibition for ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Industrial cutting and machining fluids for cast iron and steel protection
  • Automotive underbody and cavity wax corrosion protection coatings

Key Features

  • Excellent water-displacement capability forms a tenacious protective film even under wet conditions
  • Effective against both ferrous rusting and non-ferrous metal (copper, aluminum) corrosion
  • Available as free acid (DNNSA) and as calcium or barium salt for different application requirements
  • Compatible with a wide range of mineral and synthetic base oils for flexible formulation
