Vinyl Acetate Monomer

CAS Number: 108-05-4

Vinyl acetate monomer (VAc) is the key monomer for polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) copolymer dispersions used in construction adhesives, interior paints, and paper coatings. It is also the precursor for polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) through saponification.

Technical Specifications

appearanceColorless transparent liquid
purity (%)≥99.9
water content (%)≤0.04
acidity (as acetic acid, %)≤0.003
inhibitor (hydroquinone, ppm)3–5

Applications

  • Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) wood and paper adhesives
  • VAE copolymer dispersions for construction and decorative coatings
  • Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) production via saponification
  • Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer film manufacturing
  • Textile warp sizing and finishing

Key Features

  • Low Tg copolymer building block for flexible film and adhesive applications
  • Easily saponified to PVOH providing water-soluble polymer intermediate
  • High reactivity with ethylene for VAE dispersions with superior wet adhesion
  • Ultra-low acid and water content for consistent emulsion polymerization batch quality
