Anthracite Filter Media
CAS Number: 68909-21-7
Crushed and graded anthracite coal is the most widely used granular media for rapid gravity and pressure filtration in water and wastewater treatment. Its angular particle structure and lower density compared to sand provide superior head loss characteristics and excellent turbidity removal efficiency. Used as the upper layer in dual-media (anthracite over sand) or multi-media filter beds.
Technical Specifications
| appearance | Black angular granules |
| effective size | 0.8–2.0 mm (standard grades) |
| acid solubility | ≤5% |
| loss on abrasion | ≤3% |
| specific gravity | 1.4–1.6 g/cm³ |
| uniformity coefficient | ≤1.5 |
Applications
- Municipal drinking water rapid gravity filtration
- Industrial process water pressure filtration
- Dual-media filter bed (anthracite over quartz sand)
- Swimming pool and recreational water filtration
- Wastewater tertiary treatment filtration
Key Features
- Lower density than sand allows coarser particle retention for longer filter runs
- Angular shape provides higher void fraction and better turbidity capture
- Hard and abrasion-resistant for long service life under backwash cycles
- Standard media for dual-media filtration in water treatment plants globally
