Bronopol Industrial Water Treatment Biocide
CAS Number: 52-51-7
Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol) is a broad-spectrum non-oxidizing biocide used in cooling water, paper mill white water, oilfield water injection, and industrial process water to control bacteria including sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). It releases formaldehyde and bromine species upon decomposition, providing multi-mechanism antimicrobial action effective across neutral to mildly alkaline pH ranges.

Applications
- Cooling tower and industrial cooling water microbiological control
- Paper mill white water and pulp slurry bactericide
- Oilfield produced water and injection water SRB control
- Metalworking cutting fluid and hydraulic fluid preservation
- Industrial process water with neutral to slightly alkaline pH
Key Features
- Multi-mechanism action via formaldehyde and bromine release for broad-spectrum kill
- Effective against SRB reducing microbiologically influenced corrosion
- Solid form offers easy storage and transport vs. liquid biocides
- Low aquatic toxicity at use concentrations — acceptable in many discharge programs
