Polyisobutenyl Succinimide (PIBSI) Dispersant

CAS Number: 84605-19-6

Polyisobutenyl succinimide (PIBSI) is the most widely used ashless dispersant in engine oil formulations, keeping soot, oxidation products, and carbonaceous deposits suspended in the oil and preventing sludge and varnish formation. The polyisobutenyl tail provides oil solubility while the succinimide head group strongly associates with polar contaminants. PIBSI is essential in every modern engine oil package from PCMO to HDEO, enabling extended drain intervals and clean engine operation.

Technical Specifications

TBN10–30 mg KOH/g
appearanceDark amber to dark brown viscous liquid
nitrogen content1.2–2.0 wt%
flash point (COC)>180 °C
PIB molecular weight (Mn)950–2300 Da
kinematic viscosity (100°C)150–3000 mm²/s

Applications

  • Passenger car motor oil (PCMO) ashless dispersant for sludge and varnish control
  • Heavy-duty diesel engine oil (HDEO) dispersant for soot and deposit control
  • Automatic transmission fluids (ATF) for friction material and deposit compatibility
  • Two-stroke engine oils for pre-dilution and air-cooled engine cleanliness
  • Industrial circulating and gear oils requiring deposit prevention

Key Features

  • Highly effective soot and sludge dispersancy prevents engine deposit buildup over long drain intervals
  • Ashless formula does not contribute sulfated ash, phosphorus, or sulfur (low-SAPS compatible)
  • Available in mono-, bis-, and poly-succinimide structures for optimized dispersancy and compatibility
  • Post-treated (borated/maleated) grades available for enhanced dispersancy and friction performance
