Polyisobutenyl Succinic Anhydride (PIBSA)

CAS Number: 28777-98-2

Polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (PIBSA) is the key intermediate in the synthesis of PIBSI dispersants, produced by the thermal or chlorination-free ene reaction of high-reactivity polyisobutylene with maleic anhydride. It is also used directly as a corrosion inhibitor and emulsifier in metalworking fluids, fuel additives, and specialty lubricants. The anhydride functionality reacts readily with amines, alcohols, and other nucleophiles to produce customized lubricant additive molecules.

Applications

  • Synthesis intermediate for PIBSI ashless dispersants in engine oil formulations
  • Corrosion inhibitor and emulsifier in water-based metalworking fluids
  • Fuel additive intermediate for gasoline and diesel injector cleanliness additives
  • Asphalt emulsifier and adhesion promoter in road construction applications
  • Coupling agent and compatibilizer in specialty polymer and lubricant formulations

Key Features

  • High-reactivity PIB (HR-PIB) based grades enable chlorine-free manufacturing of PIBSI dispersants
  • Reactive anhydride group allows versatile downstream chemistry to produce customized additives
  • Multiple molecular weight grades available (Mn 950–2300) to match dispersant application needs
  • Low unreacted maleic anhydride content ensures additive product quality and low corrosivity
