Low to medium molecular weight polyisobutylene (PIB) is a highly branched, viscous polymer used as a tackifier and thickener in lubricating greases, chain oils, and adhesive lubricants. Its exceptional tackiness and film-forming properties prevent lubricant throw-off from high-speed chains, gears, and open mechanisms. PIB is also widely used as a component in compounded gear oils, two-stroke engine oil base components, and as a processing aid in rubber compounding.
