Polymethacrylate (PMA) Pour Point Depressant

CAS Number: 25087-26-7

Polymethacrylate (PMA) pour point depressants work by co-crystallizing with wax molecules in petroleum-derived base oils, disrupting the wax crystal network and preventing gelation at low temperatures. They enable formulation of engine oils and industrial lubricants with pour points as low as -45°C, meeting stringent cold-start performance requirements. PMA PPDs are effective across Group I, II, and III base oils and are compatible with OCP VI improvers in multi-grade formulations.

Applications

  • Passenger car motor oils requiring cold cranking and pumping performance at low temperatures
  • Industrial hydraulic and gear oils for cold-climate operation
  • Diesel engine oils for arctic and winter service applications
  • Automatic transmission fluids and power steering fluids
  • Biodegradable ester-based lubricants for cold-climate outdoor equipment

Key Features

  • Significantly reduces pour point of Group I-III mineral oil based lubricants by 20–40°C
  • Different structural variants available tuned for specific wax crystal types in different base oils
  • Compatible with OCP and HSD VI improvers without synergy penalties in multi-grade formulations
  • Low treat rate (0.1–1.5%) delivers large performance improvement at minimal cost addition
