Vinylidene Chloride
CAS Number: 75-35-4
Vinylidene chloride (VDC) is the monomer for polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) copolymers, which provide exceptional oxygen, water vapor, and flavor barrier properties. VDC copolymers with vinyl chloride or acrylates are used as barrier coatings for flexible food packaging, pharmaceutical blister films, and high-performance barrier films.
Technical Specifications
| appearance | Colorless transparent liquid |
| purity (%) | ≥99.5 |
| water content (ppm) | ≤100 |
| acidity (as HCl, ppm) | ≤10 |
| inhibitor (MEHQ, ppm) | 200 ± 50 |
Applications
- PVDC barrier coating for flexible food packaging films
- Pharmaceutical blister and strip packaging films
- Oxygen barrier wrap and cling film for food preservation
- High-barrier coating for paper and paperboard packaging
- VDC/VCM copolymer bottles for condiments and sauces
Key Features
- Outstanding oxygen and moisture barrier far superior to PE, PP, or standard PVC
- Copolymerizes with VCM or acrylates to tune barrier vs. flexibility balance
- Stable inhibitor system maintains safety during ambient temperature storage
- Low acidity prevents equipment corrosion and catalyst deactivation
