Isophorone

CAS Number: 78-59-1

Isophorone (≥99.0%) is a high-boiling, slow-evaporating cyclic ketone solvent used in high-solids coatings, automotive refinishes, and wood coatings where maximum open time and flow is required. It is also a key chemical intermediate for isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol, and menthol synthesis.

Technical Specifications

appearanceColorless to pale yellow liquid
purity (%)≥99.0
water content (%)≤0.10
boiling point (°C)215.2
density (g/mL, 20°C)0.920–0.924

Applications

  • High-boiling solvent in high-solids and automotive refinish coatings
  • Wood coating solvent providing extended open time and leveling
  • Chemical intermediate for IPDI (polyurethane raw material)
  • Synthesis intermediate for 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol and menthol
  • Selective solvent for specialty inks and screen printing

Key Features

  • Very high boiling point (215°C) providing the slowest evaporation among common ketone solvents
  • Excellent solvency for polyurethane, epoxy, and acrylic high-solids systems
  • Strategic precursor for IPDI enabling forward integration into PU supply chain
  • Low water content and high purity ensuring stable performance in sensitive coating systems
