Sodium Persulfate (SPS)
CAS Number: 7775-27-1
Sodium Persulfate (Na2S2O8) is a powerful, stable oxidizing agent widely used in advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for industrial wastewater treatment and in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for soil and groundwater remediation. When activated by heat, UV light, alkali, or transition metal ions (Fe2+), it generates sulfate radicals (SO4-) with an oxidation potential of 2.6 V, capable of degrading recalcitrant organic pollutants including chlorinated solvents (TCE, PCE), 1,4-dioxane, BTEX, and PFAS precursors. Compared with hydrogen peroxide, sodium persulfate offers longer half-life in the subsurface, higher selectivity, and easier handling as a free-flowing crystalline solid. Also widely used as a polymerization initiator and metal surface treatment etchant.
