Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)

CAS Number: 78-67-1

Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) is the most widely used azo free-radical initiator for vinyl polymerization in solution, suspension, and bulk processes. It decomposes at 60–80°C to generate isobutyronitrile radicals with no oxygen by-products, making it ideal for oxygen-sensitive formulations and polymerizations where peroxide-induced side reactions must be avoided.

Technical Specifications

appearanceWhite crystalline powder
purity (%)≥98.0
loss on drying (%)≤0.5
melting point (°C)102–104 (decompose)
nitrogen content (%)18.5–19.5

Applications

  • Solution polymerization of acrylic resins and specialty polymers
  • Suspension polymerization of PVC, polystyrene, and EPS
  • RAFT and ATRP-supplemented controlled radical polymerization
  • Blowing agent activation in foamed PVC and rubber compounds
  • Free-radical crosslinking of silicone elastomers and rubbers

Key Features

  • Clean decomposition generates only carbon-centered radicals with no oxygenated by-products
  • Half-life of 10 hours at 64°C enables precise temperature-controlled polymerization
  • No metal residues in polymer product — critical for electronic and biomedical grades
  • Compatible with all major vinyl and acrylic monomers in solution and suspension processes
