Dimercaptothiadiazole (DMTD) Metal Deactivator

CAS Number: 1072-71-5

2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) is a highly effective metal deactivator and copper corrosion inhibitor used in lubricants and fuels to prevent catalytic oxidation by copper and other transition metals. It forms stable chelate complexes with copper ions at ppm concentrations, passivating copper and brass surfaces and neutralizing pro-oxidant metal ions in solution. DMTD is essential in gear oils and engine oils that contact copper alloy components in gearboxes, bearings, and coolers.

Applications

  • Gear oil copper corrosion inhibitor (ASTM D130 and D4636 compliance)
  • Engine oil copper deactivator to prevent pro-oxidant metal contamination
  • Hydraulic fluid copper and brass component protection
  • Automatic transmission fluid metal deactivation
  • Industrial cutting and metalworking fluid corrosion inhibitor for non-ferrous metals

Key Features

  • Extremely effective copper chelation and passivation at very low treat rates (50–500 ppm)
  • Prevents pro-oxidant copper ion catalysis that accelerates lubricant oxidative degradation
  • Protects copper, brass, and bronze alloy components from corrosive attack in oil systems
  • Available as solid, oil-soluble derivative, or blended solution for ease of incorporation
