Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) with unique oil-solubility that allows it to penetrate into pores and exfoliate from within, making it the most effective topical ingredient for acne treatment, blackhead removal, and oily skin management. It also has anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties. Used at 0.5–2% in leave-on acne treatments and up to 30% in professional chemical peels.
