Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is a quaternary ammonium compound with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. It is one of the most widely used disinfectants and preservatives in healthcare, food processing, and household hygiene products. BAC acts by disrupting the cell membrane of microorganisms and is effective at low concentrations (0.01–0.1%).
