Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)
CAS Number: 25637-99-4
Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is an additive cycloaliphatic brominated flame retardant historically used in expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) thermal insulation boards in the construction sector, as well as textile back-coatings. It provides effective flame retardancy at low loadings (0.5–1.5%) in polystyrene foam. Note: HBCD is listed as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP) under the Stockholm Convention and is restricted or banned in the EU, USA, and many other jurisdictions; buyers must verify local regulations before procurement.
Technical Specifications
| appearance | White crystalline powder |
| moisture (%) | <0.2 |
| thermal stability | Stable to 180 °C |
| bromine content (%) | 73.5–74.5 |
| melting point (°C) | 172–184 |
| particle size D50 (µm) | 5–15 |
Applications
- Legacy FR in expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation boards for construction (restricted in EU/Stockholm)
- Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam insulation boards for building envelopes
- Textile and upholstery fabric back-coating in markets where permitted
- Polystyrene packaging foam flame retardant in non-restricted jurisdictions
- Research reference standard for analytical and environmental monitoring purposes
Key Features
- Very high bromine content (74%) achieves effective FR at ultra-low loading (0.5–1.5%) in EPS foam
- Minimal effect on EPS thermal insulation properties and mechanical performance at low use levels
- Low melting point variants available for improved EPS bead coating during pearl polymerization
- Regulatory caution: subject to Stockholm Convention POP listing and regional bans — confirm local compliance
