Sulfurized Olefin Extreme Pressure Additive

CAS Number: 68952-81-8

Sulfurized olefins are reactive sulfur-containing extreme pressure (EP) additives produced by the reaction of olefins with elemental sulfur or sulfur chlorides. They form iron sulfide protective films at asperity contact points under high-load gear and bearing contacts, preventing scuffing and welding. Available in active and inactive sulfur variants, they are core components in GL-4/GL-5 gear oils and heavy-duty industrial lubricants.

Technical Specifications

appearanceDark amber to dark brown liquid
4-ball weld load>250 kgf
flash point (COC)>120 °C
total sulfur content30–50 wt%
active sulfur content20–40 wt%
kinematic viscosity (100°C)5–20 mm²/s

Applications

  • Automotive gear oils (GL-4, GL-5) for manual transmissions and axles
  • Industrial gear oils (ISO VG 68–680) for enclosed gearboxes
  • Metalworking and cutting fluids requiring extreme pressure protection
  • Compressor oils operating under high discharge pressure
  • Chain oils and open gear lubricants in harsh industrial environments

Key Features

  • High active sulfur content delivers excellent scuffing and welding protection under shock loads
  • Reacts with iron surfaces to form a sacrificial sulfide film that prevents metal-to-metal contact
  • Available in both thermally active and inactive forms for corrosion-sensitive applications
  • Cost-effective EP component readily combined with phosphorus-based antiwear additives
