Zeolite A is a synthetic aluminosilicate ion-exchange material used as the primary phosphate-free builder in modern laundry detergent powders. It effectively softens water by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions, and its fine particle size provides excellent incorporation into spray-dried detergent granules. Zeolite A is environmentally benign and does not contribute to aquatic eutrophication.
