1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is a gaseous cyclopropene that irreversibly binds to plant ethylene receptors, blocking the action of endogenous and exogenous ethylene and thereby delaying ripening, senescence, and post-harvest deterioration of fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers. It is applied as a controlled-atmosphere treatment in cold storage or as a field application via sachet or aqueous formulation. 1-MCP is the active ingredient in SmartFresh and similar post-harvest products approved in over 50 countries.
